ABOUT RODERICK TOPPING
I fell in love with photography as a ten year old. My passion for it carried me through the difficult transformative years of my teens. Starting out with a cheap Kodak Instamatic camera that shot square pictures, I eventually saved up to buy a proper 35mm camera and learned how to develop and print my photos. Almost immediately I focused on taking photos of urban landscapes and continue that to this day. I’ve shot mainly in black and white as I enjoy how the medium shadows reality rather than transcribes it and, as such, imparts some mystery and drama.
Other than urban landscapes, (mostly in New Haven, Connecticut and New York City), I also like to take pictures in nature. Beyond that I can’t really point to a particular style or genre of photography that I embrace except to say that I often look for mundane subjects and frame or contextualize them in such a way that will invite a second look when normally they wouldn’t merit a glance. I also like to take photos that seem like they are part of an unknown story, (they usually are!), and let the viewer wonder about them.
I don’t claim any great meaning, message or theme behind my photos. I just like to take pictures that I find interesting or mysterious or whimsical. I get a good deal of satisfaction and enjoyment from it and if others like it I guess that’s good too!
